 IUPUI Panel “Responding to Hate” On Thursday, December 8, 2016, JCRC Program Director Lauren Morgan was invited to speak on a panel at IUPUI in response to the wave of hate incidents that have taken place in Indiana. Other panelists included Rima Shahid, Executive Director of the Muslim Alliance of Indiana, Marshawn Wolley, President of the Exchange Indianapolis Urban League, Amanda Bonilla, Assistant Director of Social Justice Education IUPUI, and Alice Jones, LGBT Advocate and Adjunct SPEA at IUPUI. The JCRC kicked off the new week with Lindsey attending JFGI’s active shooter training; every synagogue and Jewish organization should be working with David Sklar on the digital sandbox. David is gearing up for the legislative session and continues to lead coalition building efforts around passing hate crimes legislation. Lauren attended WinterFest at UIndy to help students learn about the Jewish holiday Hanukkah; many thanks to Rabbi Paula Winnig of the BJE for providing latkes, sufganiyot, dreidels, and gelt for the students to enjoy. As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, JCRC staff are busy preparing for the 2017 session and planning our 2017 programming calendar. Lindsey met with IndyReads to begin exploring how JCRC might engage in literacy efforts. David attended organization day at the Indiana Statehouse this week and continues to work to build coalitions to help pass hate crimes legislation; Indiana is one of five states in the nation that does not have hate crimes legislation in place. Lauren is working on the Muslim Jewish Women’s Alliance; we’ll be launching the application on December 1 – stay tuned! […]

It’s been a busy week at the JCRC. The week started with Executive Director Lindsey Mintz addressing the Jewish Federations of North America General Assembly (read her full remarks here), staff continued to monitor reports of hate incidents occurring in Indiana (read the RTV6 interview here), Lauren was coordinating the visit of IsraAid on their Indiana tour (read more here), Lindsey spoke at the ADL’s #NEVERISNOW summit in New York City, David attended the Indiana Social Studies conference to speak with state-wide social studies teachers about how we can work with them to get fact based curriculum about Jews, Judaism and Israel into their classrooms, and Lindsey stood with a group of faith and civic leaders at the Indiana statehouse for a press conference denouncing the recent wave of hate crimes in Indiana (read her remarks here).
