The Office of Senator Todd Young
Dirksen Senate Office Building #185
Washington, DC  20510

Dear Senator Young,

We, the undersigned Hoosier leaders and organizations, are writing to ask you to allow for a vote on the nomination of Dilawar Syed as Deputy Administrator of the Small Business Administration.  As leaders representing a cross-section of Indiana’s business, civic, and multi-faith sectors, we come together to express how important it is that Mr. Syed’s nomination be treated fairly and moved through the process to which he is entitled as an American.

We respectfully urge you to help establish a quorum in the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship so that a vote can take place and his nomination can advance to the full Senate floor.

Mr. Syed is eminently qualified to assume this particular role.  He is an entrepreneur with 20+ years of business experience alongside a history of public service, from founding chair of the California Entrepreneurship Task Force where he drove economic growth in rural areas, to his recent responsibilities on the Silicon Valley Recovery Roundtable helping the region bounce back from COVID.  During the Obama Administration, Mr. Syed served on the White House Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) and chaired the White House Initiative on AAPIs Economic Growth Committee to help small businesses recover after the 2008 financial crisis in under-served regions across the country.  In these roles, Mr. Syed engaged with small businesses across the U.S. after the passage of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.  He has also served as a liaison with the Small Business Administration and the Department of Commerce on federal initiatives such as the President’s Export Council.

In addition to the impressive list of qualifications and experiences, Mr. Syed has also been endorsed by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Small Business Administration partners, over three dozen business organizations, over 120 national and local multi-faith, community, and civil rights organizations and leaders across the country.

As you know, the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship held a hearing on Mr. Syed’s nomination in April, and he received bipartisan support in a voice vote in June.  We feel it’s time to allow Mr. Syed’s nomination to move forward with a confirmation vote so he can get to work for American entrepreneurs, innovators, and small business owners.  With COVID-19 surging again and natural disasters wreaking havoc on our communities, vulnerable small businesses need SBA’s help, and the SBA will benefit from Mr. Syed’s leadership.

Finally, Mr. Syed’s nomination is a matter of pride – not only for American Muslims, but for all those who believe that anyone, no matter their background, origin, or religion, can achieve the American dream and give back through service to our country.  As Hoosiers, we pride ourselves in supporting small businesses, championing religious freedom, and showcasing how religious, ethnic, and cultural pluralism strengthens our democracy.  Mr. Syed’s confirmation as Deputy Administrator of the SBA would exemplify all three of these Hoosier values.

Thank you, Senator Young, for your thoughtful consideration.
