Dear Members of the Greater Indianapolis Sikh community,

On behalf of the Board of the Jewish Community Relations Council and the Greater Indianapolis Jewish community, I write to express our deepest condolences to the families of the victims, the Sikh Community, and all those touched by the horrific shooting at the Indianapolis FedEx facility on April 15, 2021.
We unequivocally condemn this heinous act, and are deeply disturbed by developing information that the perpetrator might have targeted members of the Sikh Community. We are heartened to see that a full and thorough investigation is underway as to whether bias or white nationalism was a motivating factor. The Jewish community will continue to confront all forms of hate and bigotry alongside our community and interfaith partners.

We lament that this is not the first time, and likely will not be the last, that the Sikh and Jewish communities have exchanged statements of sympathy and solidarity in the face of violent extremism. Although our religious traditions may differ, we all agree that no one should feel threatened on the basis of their faith.

We will not allow intimidation, hatred, and intolerance to go unchecked. We call on all Hoosiers to speak out directly in the face of hate and to ensure that extremism and bigotry are never allowed to take hold here in Indiana, or anywhere in our country. We commit to standing alongside one another, to standing up for one another, and to working together to support Hoosiers who feel targeted because of their identity.

May the lives of those taken from your Sikh family community forever be a blessing.

In friendship and peace,
Lindsey B. Mintz
JCRC Executive Director
