The Indianapolis Jewish Community Relations Council was saddened and disturbed to see the incivility and lack of respect exhibited by some members of the Indiana General Assembly towards their colleagues on Thursday, February 18, 2021.

Each member of the Indiana General Assembly has the right to be heard as they express what they believe to be in the best interests of their constituents and respective communities, even when there is disagreement; this includes listening respectfully to the perspectives and lived experiences of Black legislators.  Far too many times in our state and country’s history, we have witnessed Black voices shouted down, and the concerns of marginalized communities swept to the side of our public policy debates.

The JCRC continues to encourage our elected officials, at all levels of government, to model respect and dignity toward each other, and recognize the impact their words and actions have on all Hoosiers.
